Villa Laura – setting for the film Under the Tuscan Sun
Hoping to trade lives with Diane Lane and live in Cortona, Italy for awhile? For those of us wanting to leave our home, instead opting to stay at the villa that served as the setting for Frances Mayes book and the movie Under the Tuscan Sun, I have good news. After four years of Italian love, Villa Laura has been restored and, for the first time, she is available for rent. There’s even a California connection with wine loving Italy.
Villa Lauren was purchased by the owners of Sonoma, California winery, Cline Cellars. Similar to when Mayes discovered Bramasole, Villa Laura was also in terrible disrepair. The crumbling villa, hidden in brambles, lay in ruins, but it held great potential. Like the lead character in Under the Tuscan Sun, Villa Laura went through its own re-birth. Kitchens and bathrooms were custom crafted by a Tuscan artist, using marble surfaces and restored original stone walls. Wrought ironed hand-crafted frames from a local artisan replaced wooden beds and were topped with English linens.
The property is beautifully landscaped with a rose garden that frames a new in-ground pool, jacuzzi, and Roman fountain. Of course the original charm and magic were retained at Villa Laura, despite the transformation. Designer Jane Thompson incorporated a mix of contemporary and antique furniture from across Europe to maintain the villa’s original character.
A rustic farmhouse, adjacent to the villa, completes the rental property. Accommodating 18 guests, this piece of Cortona is ideal for families, large groups of friends or destination weddings. It’s the perfect opportunity for guests to step into a movie set and live out their Tuscan dreams.
